Deadmau5 Threatens To Sue Small-Time Producer

Deadmau5 Threatens To Sue Small-Time ProducerDeadmau5 is threatening legal action against one Jesse Sinopoli, aka Dirty Circuit - a small-time producer from Louisian.

The producer has used the main riff from Deadmau5's Faxing Berlin on his imaginatively titlted track Berlin, which is available to buy on iTunes an Amazon. Sinopoli says he thought the loop was royalty-free, after finding it in his copy of Image Line's FL Studio 8 - meaning that he thought he could use it in his own production without any problems.

“Why are these available as loops and why aren’t they credited or noted as this [copyrighted],” wrote Sinopoli on Image Line’s online forum. “I would not have used it had I known it was his.” [Full Story]

Composer Submits 70,200 Forms To German RIAA

Composer Submits 70,200 Forms To German RIAAApplying old copyright law in the digital world is like forcing people to put a stamp on every email they send.

But whilst the rest of the world has slowly woken up to the fact that old business models don’t apply in the digital age, copyright societies, particularly ones that represent the ‘interests’ of musicians and composers still linger in the stone age.

And to prove just how out-of-touch copyright societies are in a world moving at light speed, a German composer has submitted 70,200 forms to GEMA - Germany’s version of the RIAA - for a 33 second avant garde piece that contains 70,200 samples.

The reason? GEMA requires you to fill in a form for every sample you use in a musical piece no matter how minute.

Johannes Kreidler arrived at the headquarters of GEMA in a van full of paper. Awesome. [Full Story]

Deadmau5 Defends His "All DJs Are F***ing C**ts" Comment

Deadmau5Deadmau5 has defended comments he made in an interview with the Irish Daily Star newspaper last month, saying that they have been taken out of context.

The acclaimed producer said in the interview: "DJs are f***ing c**ts. I don't really see the technical merit in playing two songs at the same speed together. They are my number one customer, right, so I'm not gonna go diss every f***ing DJ. But to say you become this massive... performer by playing other people's productions at the same speed as someone else's productions and fading between the two of them, I don't get it".

In a post on his blog this week, he responded to a torrent of criticism of this outburst in various corners of the internet.

He wrote: "I could only have imagined people would read into it so much and miss the point completely... My perception of DJ's in general from this standpoint has always been being forced into some nightclub when I would have rather stayed home, and watch some dude mash the 'play / stop' button and occasionally move a pitch slider... Mind you, I'm not a total f***ing idiot, and I recognise talent when I see it and there are many talented DJs out there for sure... Okay, to say 'all DJs are...' etc etc, to be taken literally, as this article did, was just painfully stupid and wrong on their behalf. So, I'm not the world's most eloquent person, any idiot can tell you that. But the meaning behind the statement was the concept that I recognise as being a 'disc jockey'".

Of course, how could we possibly have misinterpreted that comment? Ha ha...

German Techno DJs Unite Against Racism

German Techno DJs Unite Against RacismThis month sees German DJ/producer Monika Kruse host two anti-racism parties in Germany to raise money for the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, an organisation that seeks to combat right wing extremist youth in East Germany. The group developed as a reaction to a growing number of Neo-Nazis and other right wing organisations who are distributing racist and anti-Semitic propaganda in East Germany - and with worryingly large anti-Semitic and extreme right wing movements in Hungary, Austria, Holland and Italy to name but a few, it's something that should certainly be extened throughout Europe.

The parties are run under the No Historical Backspin name, with Monika Kruse joined by Pascal FEOS at Mau Club in Rostock on November 27th and with Mobilee man Ralf Kollmann at E-Werk club in Erlangen on November 29th.

Since 2000, Kruse has helped to raise over €60,000 for the foundation with help from the likes of Paul Van Dyk, André Galluzzi, Anja Schneider, Kiki and Tom Clark.

DJ Jean Presents Madhouse

DJ JeanNo other concept in dance history has been as durable as DJ Jean presents Madhouse.

DJ Jean was already one of the most versatile hip-hop DJs in the Netherlands when he caught the new house virus in the late 1980s. Manfred Langer had just opened the legendary iT in Amsterdam, and asked Jean to take over the Friday night show in this club. Madhouse was born and quickly grew to become the hottest club night in the Netherlands, if not the world. DJ Jean’s faultless choice of tracks and his perfect feel for the public have brought many dance floors to a state of ecstasy. The series of iT CDs that Jean and his fellow resident Marcello have released was not only the best-selling CD series of the 1990s, but also brought about the definitive breakthrough for house music in the Netherlands. In February 2009 OceanLab will be releasing their next single 'On A Good Day' taken from their 'Sirens Of The Sea' album, and we’re launching a competition giving you the chance to contribute to the official music video.

It’s all about your take on the song and how you interpret it. How much you do is up to you. Budding film producers can submit a full video, or you can just send in clips that represent your interpretation. Get creative, the more interesting and unique the clips the more likely you are to get in the video. Think footage of you and your mates, singalongs, puppets, animation - the only limit is your creativity! Stills and mobile phone footage will be accepted but the higher the resolution, the greater your chances of inclusion.

We will also be filming at Above & Beyond gigs over the next few weeks so keep an eye out for our roving camera team! [Full Story]

The Amsterdam Dance Event 2008 In Retrospect

The Amsterdam Dance Event 2008 In RetrospectCrisis? What crisis? In the parallel universe where electronic beats rule all, we are more prosperous than ever. That is to say, if you take this year's ADE as the yardstick. The thirteenth edition turned out to be the most successful one to date. And almost every delegate seems to be very excited about facing the challenges that the music industry currently is up against. Music is, or will at least provide the answer, that is an unshakable truth we all firmly believe in.

In 2007 the organisation was forced to move part of the conference program to the beautiful neighbouring Dylan Hotel due to mildew in some of the Felix Meritis rooms. One year later, the Dylan was used for the second time, now because the ADE has grown again and needed more room for panel discussions and for delegates to do their business. [Full Story]
